This is an independent inquiry which will investigate deaths which took place between 1/1/00 and 31/12/20 in inpatient mental health settings within the former North Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust, the former South Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust, and the Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust which took over responsibility for mental health services in Essex from 2017. The Inquiry was established in April 2021 and aims to report in Spring 2023.

The Essex Mental Health Independent Inquiry is investigating matters surrounding the deaths of mental health inpatients across NHS Trusts in Essex between 2000 and 2020.

The Inquiry will hear evidence from families, carers, and friends of those who died; others with experience of mental health inpatient care in Essex during the 21 year period; as well as staff, former-staff, relevant professionals, and organisations.

The Inquiry is independent of government and the health care system. In delivering a focused, independent, and robust Inquiry we wish to give the families and loved ones of those who died a chance to tell their story and inform change.
